What Are Shooting Stars?

The enchanting 'Falling Stars' or what we better know as 'Tootha huva Tara' is a source of delight for people of all ages. Many truly believe that if they see a falling star and make a wish, it will certainly come true. Whether or not that this belief is true, falling stars have always been a source of wonder -  what are they and where do they come from?

In reality, they are not 'stars' at all. They are 'meteors', that is small, solid bodies that travel from outer space into the earth's atmosphere. They are small, broken pieces of comets and when they enter our atmosphere, they leave behind a train of light and this makes them appear to be like stars. As we know, when two objects are rubbed against one another, heat is produced or 'friction' and sometimes, a little portion of this heat is given off as light. So when the meteors are passing through air, they are rubbed against the air particles and this causes the bright light.

Most of the meteors particles are small and the size of a pinhead but they can weigh up to several tons. If they are very small, they cannot make it through the earth boundary, since they are immediately destroyed by heat. Only the larger ones make it safely through and reach the earth. Scientists say that thousands of meteors fall to earth daily but most of them fall into the oceans and lakes, therefore going unnoticed. They can travel singly or in large groups or 'swarms' as they are called.

Once a meteor passes through space and reaches the earth they are named 'meteorite'. Everything within the earth's atmosphere is subject to the laws of gravity, which is why the meteorite falls down. There are certain places where we are more likely to see falling stars like in open suburb areas, with clear skies, less pollution etc.

So the next time you happen to see falling star, stop for a second and make a wish. Even if your dream does not come true, at least you will witness a fabulous scene!
