Contribution of Patanjali

Yoga is a science that people all over the world are familiar with now. Yoga is practiced for physical and spiritual well being. It is practiced by many as a means of relieving stress and inducing relaxation. Let us take a look at who was instrumental in giving this great gift to mankind.

The earliest recorded information about Yoga comes from the Yoga sutras. Sutra is a Sanskrit word, which means a rule, a precept, or an aphorism. It is also used to refer to books of rules and doctrines. And the person credited with having written the Yoga sutras is Patanjali. Patanjali lived around 150 BC at Gonda, in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Patanjali had classified channels in the human body, which he called nadi, and a few centers, which he called chakras. According to Patanjali, if the nadis and chakras are tapped properly the human body can realize the full potential of its inner strength. This inner strength of the human body is referred to as kundalini by yogacharyas.

The path to the realization of this inner strength is divided into eight stages.

  • Yama - self restraint

  • Niyama - self purification through discipline or spiritual discipline

  • Asana - posture

  • Pranayama - breath control

  • Pratyahara - withdrawal of the mind from external objects

  • Dharana - contemplation

  • Dhyana - meditation

  • Samadhi - the state of super consciousness

Patanjali, in his explanations, likened the human mind to a pond and to God as a jewel lying at the bottom of the pond. The jewel would be visible only when the surface of the pond is calm, undisturbed and clear. So if our attempts are aimed at achieving that calm, undisturbed and clear surface, we will find it easy to reach God within ourselves. And the method for achieving this goal was the practice of yoga.

The effectiveness of yoga has been seen and established through the ages. Yoga is given a lot of importance all over the world now, as practicing yoga has proved to be both therapeutic and de-stressing.
