Summer Jobs - Spend Your Time Gainfully

A glance through the wanted section in newspapers as soon as summer vacations begin, will tell you that college students are very much in demand for jobs. There are several facets to be considered here.

Dignity of labor
Gandhiji advocated and practiced the principle of dignity of labor. His ideas stand good even today.  Here is your chance to join the league. If you have time on your hands, taking up a short-term job will benefit you in many ways. And the benefit will not be just the monetary remuneration. Remember your summer job is just for spending your time gainfully, it is not a reflection on your future choice of career.

The school of life - your chance for a stint in it.
Most students lead a very sheltered existence, with caring parents cocooning them from the harsh realities of life. A job wherein you have to take up a responsibility and come up with performance will be a rewarding experience that will give you a sense of achievement. During the course of your job you will need to interact with several people  - the best way to learn interpersonal relationships. You will undoubtedly encounter problems and will need to come up with solutions for them too. Do not be overwhelmed by them, look at it this way - “ this is my chance to sharpen my problem solving skills.” Regardless of your social status, when you join an organization you are treated on par with other employees. This way you get an exposure to various facets of life.

What kind of activities would a summer job entail?
Typical short term summer jobs are in the sphere of test marketing a new product, taking surveys for marketing research, as facilitators in trade fairs and other kinds of exhibitions, telemarketing and public relations projects with event management companies, to name a few. The advent of fast food joints and ice cream parlors has given rise to the need for having young enthusiastic people to cater to customers.

Safety first
Monetary considerations should be given a back seat when you look for a summer job. Consider the type of job and the background of the company involved. Choose carefully and consult elders before taking up a job. Go in for established companies and known people. Do not accept if you feel the working conditions might lead you to the wrong kind of companionship. It is advisable to work in a group especially if it is a marketing job. This is because you will need to visit many people and places and will feel more secure and confident when with somebody. Also in case you encounter problems there will always be help on hand.

A summer job that you enjoy wholeheartedly will give you some experience that will come in handy when you work at your chosen career. The kind of discipline that a workplace requires will be good exposure for you. A sort of a dress rehearsal for later, a summer job will be a good addition to the process of growing up.
