Getting into the
groove
Take a look at another familiar scene. You sit down for an
hour’s study and by the time you really get into the proper mood,
fifteen to twenty precious minutes slip by and whatever you intended
to study is not covered in the allotted time, so you let it spill
over and continue. This happens a couple of times and before you
know it you are tired but still have a lot to study. This happens
all too often but can be avoided. Make a schedule, which allows you
to study the same subject at the same time everyday. This routine
will in itself make the settling in easy, once your mind knows that
9 p.m. is chemistry time, you are already receptive to the idea of
chemistry.
How much time is
enough?
Deadlines work wonders on your efficiency. As per your attention
span, limit your timing for one subject. It is advisable not to
allot more than forty-five minutes or at the most an hour for one
subject. Better learning is done in short bursts. This is because
when you take short breaks you are also absorbing whatever you have
studied by reflecting upon it.
Breaks are important
however…
Small breaks between subjects and/or topics are very essential.
They recharge you. However do take care that the breaks you are
taking are restful breaks that do not disrupt your concentration.
Indulging in watching television or reading your favorite novel will
do more harm than help. It will take you a long time to get back
into your ‘groove’ if you do that. Instead have a healthy snack, a
brisk walk, play with a kid…. choose your activity with care. Do not
be too rigid about your break time. Sometimes attention snaps before
the deadline is over. It is not going to help if you sit staring at
the clock waiting for break time. Be flexible, reschedule and get
back to your studies refreshed and with renewed enthusiasm. |
