How long is too long? Find out.
It is very essential that you first gauge the length of the
article/chapter/book and make an estimate as to whether you can
cover it in one reading. If not, mark it into sections and make it a
point to finish one section in one sitting. This self-inflicted
discipline will help you focus on the task in hand.
The perseverance mantra
The next step is perseverance. Persist in bringing back the
curiosity whenever you feel your attention waning. In your endeavor
to know more about the topic it is advisable that you do not plunge
head first into the text. Skim over the text and look at the
headings and subheadings, thus letting the flow of ideas grow on
you. Gradually you shall find yourself drawn into the topic. Once
your skimming is over, go in for the first paragraph, which is
generally an introduction to the main idea of the topic in question.
This is equivalent to a warming up exercise. If you find yourself
straying, remember the perseverance mantra.
Variety is essential
But it is of no use of you are slipping into boredom, so vary your
tactics. Instead of reading the whole paragraph at one go, read the
first two lines and then the last two. The gap in the thought flow
will ensure in perking up your interest and bringing it back to the
topic.
Check posts along the route
As you go along, ask yourself small questions about whatever you
have read. If you are able to answer them properly rest assured your
mind is properly focused and you are on the right track. However, if
your explanations do not sound satisfactorily clear, then stop and
make that little extra effort to concentrate and focus your
attention. Whenever you feel you are going off track, bring yourself
back by reading the bold headings that catch your eye immediately.
Absorb the meaning of the heading and follow the resultant train of
thought. From time to time read the conclusion of the
subheading/chapter to see if your thoughts are also headed the same
way.
