Effective Memorizing

There are several ways and methods to commit things to memory. Some of these methods are very effective and when you see some people rattle off information from memory it amazes you. Whereas most of us spend so much of time trying to cram a lot of information into our brain and at the most we remember it on the day of the exam and then once the deed is over and done with, all the ‘knowledge’ we acquired suddenly vanishes. So it is evident that there is something wrong somewhere, the more exams we give the more we study and the more we study the more we are expected to know, but do we?

In most cases no, many of us find it extremely difficult to recall needed information at the right time. Memory is useful only if can be accessed at the right place and time. It happens to all of us, some information that you feel is at the tip of your tongue eludes you when you need it and then late in the night it comes to you in a flash. Of what use it then? If others are able to have memories that seem magical, we should be able to do so too. And well, nothing great has ever been achieved without hard work. So the formula is here in front of you. To how much use you put it is entirely in your hands.

Employ all your senses for memorizing
Experts say that it is advisable to use as many of your senses as possible to memorize. However dull or uninteresting a topic may be, try to visualize it and ‘see’ a picture in your head. We forget words easily but not pictures. Some people find that reading out loud helps them keep facts in memory. Try it. Listening to your own voice say what your eyes are reading is a kind of revision in itself.

Link thoughts through associations
Where long lists are involved, use the technique of associating one item to the subsequent one. The association should be vivid and interesting so that it remains embedded in your mind. The associations that you make should logically tie in with each other effortlessly. Many people find memorizing dates very tedious. Take some time to look at the dates carefully and try to associate them in some way to personally important dates that you never forget. It will then be very easy to recall them when needed. Remember the human mind is capable of having a phenomenal memory, we just need enough practice.
